How to Become Visible to AI Systems
Founders and brands now ask the same question: how do I show up when someone asks ChatGPT about my market? Here is the honest answer, and why most of what is sold as the answer is not one.
When a customer, an investor or a journalist wants to understand a market, they increasingly ask a model. The model answers with whoever it can read. If it cannot read you, you are not losing the argument, you are absent from it. This is the visibility question of the decade, and an entire industry has already formed around it, selling GEO, AEO, AI SEO and "AI search optimization" as a service.
Most of that industry sells a promise: we will get you into the answers. I work differently, and the difference is the point of this page.
Visibility is not attention. Visibility is legibility
Attention is what advertising buys, and it ends with the budget. Legibility is whether an AI system can retrieve you, describe you accurately, in your own positioning language, and surface you for the queries where you belong. Attention is rented. Legibility compounds, because every model that reads you correctly becomes a distribution channel that costs nothing.
What actually makes you legible
Not tricks against models, and not volume of content. Architecture: one canonical definition of who you are, identical everywhere, from your site to your bio lines. Coined terms that you define and repeat verbatim, so that when a model explains the concept, it arrives at you. Machine-readable surfaces: llms.txt, JSON-LD structured data, canonical tags. And sources beyond your own domain that confirm the same wording, because models trust what more than one surface repeats.
Why this is not what agencies sell
A GEO agency sells you an outcome it cannot control: "we will rank you in AI answers." No one controls model behavior; models change with retraining and retrieval updates, and anyone promising specific citations is pricing a promise, not a method.
I sell the opposite structure: a frozen baseline of how models see you today, documented interventions, re-measurement on the same query set, and a written list of what the method cannot guarantee. You either see attributable movement within the tested scope, or I tell you it did not move. On a market of promises, measurement is the differentiation.
Where to start
If you are a founder doing this yourself: the method is published, step by step, as the Legibility Sprint, and the free guide Visibility Without Budget covers the foundations. If you are a brand: the work starts with the Brand Legibility Diagnostic, a measured snapshot before any intervention. Both start the same way, because the discipline is the same: become readable first, become chosen as a consequence.
Questions this page answers
How do I show up in ChatGPT or Perplexity recommendations?
By becoming legible rather than loud: one canonical definition of who you are, identical across every surface; coined terms you define and repeat verbatim; machine-readable pages with llms.txt, JSON-LD structured data and canonical tags; and external sources that confirm the same wording. Models answer with whoever they can read unambiguously. No one can guarantee a specific citation for a specific query, because model behavior changes with retraining and retrieval updates.
What is GEO and does it work?
GEO (generative engine optimization) is the practice of making content more likely to be retrieved and cited by AI systems. The structural part works: entity consistency, structured data, machine-readable surfaces, corroborating sources. What does not hold is the promise layer: no practitioner controls model behavior, so guaranteed rankings inside AI answers are a pricing of hope, not a method.
How is legibility different from GEO?
GEO is typically sold as a promised outcome: ranking inside AI answers. Legibility is a measured architecture: a frozen baseline of how models currently read you, documented interventions, re-measurement on the same query set, and an explicit list of what cannot be guaranteed. The deliverable is attributable movement within the tested scope, not a promise.
Can anyone guarantee AI visibility?
No. Models change with retraining and retrieval updates, and no external party controls what a model cites for a given query. A guarantee of specific AI rankings is a red flag, and asking for one is a useful test of any vendor: the honest ones will offer a measured baseline and attributable movement instead.
